COP27: A look back at Low Carbon Logistics

As the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27, kicks off in Egypt this week, we’ve taken a look back at our involvement in last year’s COP26 in Glasgow.

Championing zero-carbon logistics and the intermodal shift from road to rail in Scotland, Mossend International Railfreight Park (MIRP) proudly hosted Low Carbon Logistics – the first event of its kind in Scotland. The event, which over 500 people attended, celebrated innovation in the rail and road sectors and promoted the importance of Pulling Together for Net Zero.

Low Carbon Logistics was a three-day event held onsite at Bellshill that was part of Glasgow’s COP26 programme and was developed by MIRP in collaboration with Scottish Enterprise, Network Rail, Transport Scotland and Peter D Stirling. The event, which demonstrated the Scottish and UK Governments’ vision for a zero-carbon supply chain network and a more competitive and efficient road and rail freight sector, brought together leading industry professionals, international delegates and potential investors and customers.

In the eight weeks leading up to Low Carbon Logistics, the site at Mossend underwent a transformation that included the laying of 900m of new track to the already electrified West Coast Main Line. The line was used at Low Carbon Logistics to showcase several electric freight locomotives, including a new hybrid class 88, and to facilitate four naming ceremonies, including that of the ‘Billy Stirling’.

See our post on the naming of the ‘Billy Stirling’, a GBRf Class 92 electric locomotive here.

Low Carbon Logistics raised the profile and awareness of the low carbon transition in the rail and road sectors and was a unique opportunity for MIRP, one of only nine Green Investment Portfolio (GIP) sites in Scotland, to show the success of its model to a national and global audience.

For over four years now, PD Ports has operated a very successful intermodal rail freight service with direct connections from Teesport to Mossend. This route provides a simple, more cost effective and environmentally friendly route for European markets for Scotland’s imports and exports, whilst alleviating the already congested UK road network. As trade continues to grow and the requirements for more freight to be moved by rail, the new development at Mossend International Railfreight Park is both much needed and an exciting opportunity. It will play a significant role in transforming the modern supply chains into and out of Scotland and we wish the project every success.
