Phase 2 plans submitted to North Lanarkshire Council

The Phase 2 plans for Mossend International Railfreight Park (MIRP) have now been submitted to the North Lanarkshire Council’s Planning Service.

The latest application relates to engineering works for site preparation supporting industrial and distribution uses including site access, together with site platforming, utilities and blue-green infrastructure and landscaping.

Last month, the Council granted full approval to the site’s Phase 1 plans, which cover the detailed proposals and layout of the Rail Terminal including cross docking transit building, secondary buildings plus electric automated overhead gantry cranes (RMG) and associated infrastructure.

MIRP represents a major new low carbon, multi-modal rail freight facility located in the heart of Scotland. When complete, it will provide 2.2 million sq ft of logistics space and Scotland’s first 775-metre electric rail terminal, able to accommodate 16 trains per day as part of a 24/7 operation.

David Stirling, Director of Mossend International Railfreight Park operator Peter D Stirling Ltd, said: “We are pleased to have reached the next stage of this development with the lodging of the Phase 2 application, just weeks after gaining approval for Phase 1. Once complete, MIRP will be Scotland’s newest Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SFRI) serving national and international clients, comprising a new rail freight terminal, distribution park and access road.”

Construction will be phased with the rail terminal starting in Q3 2021 and completing in Q2 2023. The warehouse and logistics park development will commence the same year.

For over four years now, PD Ports has operated a very successful intermodal rail freight service with direct connections from Teesport to Mossend. This route provides a simple, more cost effective and environmentally friendly route for European markets for Scotland’s imports and exports, whilst alleviating the already congested UK road network. As trade continues to grow and the requirements for more freight to be moved by rail, the new development at Mossend International Railfreight Park is both much needed and an exciting opportunity. It will play a significant role in transforming the modern supply chains into and out of Scotland and we wish the project every success.
