Boost for Scottish Rail Freight and MIRP

As we approach the end of 2024 we can report steady progress on the new Zero-Carbon Rail Freight Terminal, MIRP. Site preparation has been ongoing throughout the year and prospects have been further enhanced by a recent Network Rail decision.

Network Rail have announced that they will be discounting access charges that rail operators pay to run freight trains on the UK network. This exciting proposal could see the relevant access charges waived for six months whilst a new traffic flow is established. For potential customers looking to try and use modern rail freight this is a huge boost and will help many with plans they may have towards a net zero supply chain with rail transport at its heart.

The rail freight sector plays a crucial role in keeping the country moving, providing a faster, greener and more efficient way of transporting goods. The new governments policy is to promote and grow the use of rail freight services across the country and make moving goods by rail the obvious choice and this initiative will do just that

For over four years now, PD Ports has operated a very successful intermodal rail freight service with direct connections from Teesport to Mossend. This route provides a simple, more cost effective and environmentally friendly route for European markets for Scotland’s imports and exports, whilst alleviating the already congested UK road network. As trade continues to grow and the requirements for more freight to be moved by rail, the new development at Mossend International Railfreight Park is both much needed and an exciting opportunity. It will play a significant role in transforming the modern supply chains into and out of Scotland and we wish the project every success.
