On Tuesday 19th April, PD Stirling of Mossend International Railfreight Park (MIRP) saw the unveiling of the Billy Stirling cab. A Deutsche Bahn carbon-free locomotive, named for Donald Malcolm – the logistics company’s former Director – was also unveiled.

The cab was named the Billy Stirling, after David (Managing Director) and Andrew Stirling’s (Director) father and predecessor at PD Stirling and Mossend. Members of the Stirling and Malcolm families were both present at Mossend, including the Malcolm Group’s CEO, Andrew Malcolm.

PD Stirling gave a substantial donation at the Malcolm Group’s Donald Malcolm Memorial Ball in December, resulting in the naming of the centenary cab. Together, the two companies have raised money for three local charities: Beatson Cancer Charity, Accord Hospice and St Vincent’s Hospice.

“We’re really pleased to have partnered with the Malcolm Group in our charitable donation, further strengthening the longstanding relationship between our two families and businesses in paying tribute to our predecessors – pioneers of the Scottish logistics and rail industries,” said David Stirling, PD Stirling Managing Director.

With electric and carbon-free rail and logistics being a shared vision, the two companies continue to work together in progressing towards a net zero future at MIRP. The Mossend International Railfreight Park team is anticipating the commencement of construction on the new railhead later in 2022.

For over four years now, PD Ports has operated a very successful intermodal rail freight service with direct connections from Teesport to Mossend. This route provides a simple, more cost effective and environmentally friendly route for European markets for Scotland’s imports and exports, whilst alleviating the already congested UK road network. As trade continues to grow and the requirements for more freight to be moved by rail, the new development at Mossend International Railfreight Park is both much needed and an exciting opportunity. It will play a significant role in transforming the modern supply chains into and out of Scotland and we wish the project every success.
